Why is drunk driving such a big deal?

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2017 | Criminal Defense, DWI/DUI |

Drunk driving is nothing to take lightly. You know that it’s not safe to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, but you did so anyway. Maybe you didn’t think you’d had as much to drink as you did, or maybe your drink mixed with medications you took and caused unexpected side effects. Whatever the reason, you now face a charge for drinking and driving.

Your attorney can help defend you, but you’ll be combating many facts about the dangers of drunk driving. Drunk driving is treated harshly in Louisiana, so a strong defense is your best option.

In the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) last update, there were reportedly 3,046 people killed in drunk driving crashes in Louisiana between the study years of 2003 and 2012. The ages most likely to be involved in these accidents and to be killed were 21 to 34.

In Louisiana, 2.5 percent of people reported driving after drinking too much within the last 30 days compared to the national average of 1.9 percent of people. Drinking is commonplace in the state, so it is perhaps no surprise that Louisiana has a higher number of people who report drinking and driving. Statistics also show that it’s more likely for men to die in collisions involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher.

Although drinking and driving is demonized in the state, that doesn’t mean that all cases are created equal. You have a chance to defend yourself, and you should take that time to defend yourself clearly against any negative events you caused.
