Summer is here and for many Louisianans this means more opportunities for cookouts, picnics and other forms of social fun. Getting together with friends is great and having a drink or two can make things that much better. But often, moderation is the key to keeping the good times going longer.
No one wants to have a good day go bad by being stopped by the police for driving while under the influence. By controlling your consumption of alcohol, you have a better chance of staying under the legal level for blood alcohol content. Here are three quick tips that may help you enjoy drinking while keeping your BAC in check:
- On hot days, stay away from mixed drinks when hungry. This combination can produce hypoglycemia which may induce mood shifts, weakness or dizziness.
- Be careful when having drinks that you are not accustomed to. Some drinks, such as those with rum and fruit, may contain more alcohol than you suspect.
- Take sips instead of gulps. Rather than just drinking for the effect, take time to appreciate the aesthetics, such as the flavor and aroma, of the drink you are having.
Please note that drinking affects every individual differently. As such, the above tips should be taken as set of suggestions, not as a guarantee against receiving a DUI if you are pulled over by the police.
We are all accountable for our own actions, but having a couple of drinks does not preclude you from having rights. Police must have due cause to pull you over and they must adhere to proper procedures when issuing sobriety tests.
If you are ever on the receiving end of DUI charges, a Louisiana criminal defense attorney may be able to advise you on the next steps to take.
