How can I avoid getting a DWI during the holidays?

On Behalf of | Nov 25, 2014 | Criminal Defense, DWI/DUI |

So the holiday season has rolled back around yet again. This is the time of year for counting blessings, giving gifts and sharing time with family and good friends. Throughout Baton Rouge, there are many opportunities for socializing during this festive season. This can mean having a drink or two as part of the celebrations.

However, one thing that can take the cheer right out of your holiday is getting pulled over by the police and being arrested for driving while intoxicated. So, what are some of the ways to avoid this unpleasant occurrence? Consumer Reports published a list of tips that you may wish to consider for when you head out to engage in some holiday fun:

  • Travel via public transportation. The best way to avoid being arrested for driving while intoxicated is to simply not drive. Use the bus or take a cab to get around.
  • Hand your keys to someone else. This could decrease the urge to get behind the wheel after having had a few drinks.
  • Choose a designated driver. Find a volunteer willing to stay sober and drive you home.
  • Take along an overnight bag. With a bag of necessities in tow, you can stay right where you are and sleep until you are in a condition to drive home.

All of these ideas have merit because if you’re not operating a vehicle, you cannot be pulled over and charged. But should you choose to get behind the wheel after having had a few drinks, you may find yourself facing drunk driving charges. Such charges can lead to fines, license suspension and even jail time.

If this happens, you may consider having a Louisiana DUI attorney evaluate the records of your case and make recommendations on how to reach your best possible outcome.
